For Eldora Mountain Resort’s opening day, a skier and a snowboarder lined up traditionally early, before the sun hit the slopes, for the bragging rights of catching the first chairlift of the season.

But a latecomer jumped into the singles line just minutes before lift service began and joined the other two for the season’s first chair up Challenge Mountain.

“It’s a three-person chair,” said Keith Speckman, the snowboarder who hopped off the bus from Boulder at 8:50 a.m. He’d never caught a first chair before. In fact, he said, “I’ve never even been up on opening day before.”

Eldora, Boulder County’s only ski area, opened today with eight runs on beginner and intermediate terrain. Despite a windy start to the day in Boulder, the wind was calm and the temperatures were mild while people waited in line at the Challenge Lift.
