DENVER—A Jefferson County Public Schools administrator and educator with 38 years’ experience has been appointed by Gov. John Hickenlooper to the University of Colorado Board of Regents, filling a vacancy left by the resignation of Monisha Merchant.

Irene C. Griego is the director of diversity and inclusion, as well as interim community superintendent for the state’s largest school district. By law, Griego’s appointment runs until the next general election in November 2012.

Merchant resigned to become Sen. Michael Bennet’s senior adviser for business affairs. Merchant began her six-year term in January 2009 after winning election in November 2008. The Lakewood Democrat resigned effective Sept. 25.
