Even with the latest iOS 5 software update, none of my free iPhone Twitter apps do a very good job of sending me real-time notifications of new mentions, retweets or direct messages.
After a fellow tweeter recommended Tweetbot, I paid money for a Twitter client for the first time and haven’t looked back. The program’s user interface is attractive but simple. Like its name indicates, the $3 app has a robotic theme, both in appearance and sound. In addition to basics like mentions and retweets, you can set up push notifications for items such as favorited tweets and when you’re added to a list. There are a bunch of other options that can be customized, such as how tweets appear when you retweet someone else. Tweetbot works on an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 4.1 or later.
