DENVER—The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $4.5 million to support redevelopment of corridors along light-rail lines under construction in the Denver area.

HUD awards the grants to support regional projects that integrate housing, jobs, transportation, schools and other infrastructure.

The department on Monday announced grants totaling nearly $96 million to communities and organizations around the country, including $4.5 million to the Denver Regional Council of Governments. The Denver-area group expects the new light-rail lines will provide residents with greater access to jobs, lower combined housing and transportation costs, less fossil fuel consumption and the development of pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly urban centers along transit lines.
