Three accused thieves in their teens failed a cardinal lesson of crime early today in El Paso County: be cool.

An El Paso County Sheriff’s deputy was patrolling Wageman Drive near Almont Street near Widefield about 2:20 a.m., when he saw three young men dressed in dark clothes running down the street.

Their backpacks, it turned out, were loaded with items stolen from at least one car in the neighborhood. To make matters worse, the pair had drugs and alcohol, too, charges indicate.

The deputy caught up to one 17-year-old hiding behind car, while another deputy found a second 17-year-old hidden in a flower bed. The third boy got away, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Their names were not released because they are juveniles.

They were given summonses alleging second-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespass, possession of ethyl alcohol by an underage person, possession of a controlled substance and conspiracy.

Both were released to their parents.

Anyone with information about the third teen or about thefts in the Wageman Drive and Almont Street area can call the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office at 719-390-5555.
