The Summit County Sheriff’s Department effectively asked residents and visitors to pay attention today.

The northern part of the county has had 14 recent theft cases involving unlocked cars and trucks. In three cases, thieves took wallets, checkbooks, backpacks, skis, electronics and clothing from the open beds of pickup trucks.

In another case, a $1,200 generator was carted off from the bed of pickup, the department said.

In some cases, “the vehicles’ owners stated that their cars had been targeted just a couple of weeks prior as well,” the Sheriff’s Department said in a press release today.

Most of the thefts have happened in the Wildernest, Dillon Valley, Summit Cove and Keystone areas, the agency stated.

The Sheriff’s Office urged people to lock their vehicles and leave anything of value in the trunk. Because of the holidays, thieves are especially attentive for such crimes of opportunity, the agency warned.

There is a $1,000 reward in the cases.

Anyone with information can call the Summit County Sheriff’s Department at 970-453-2232 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-453-7867.
