Gov. Sam Brownback of Kansas issued a public apology Monday to a high school student who was disciplined for posting a disparaging Twitter message about him while she was attending a youth program at the state capitol.
“My staff overreacted to this tweet, and for that I apologize,” said Brownback, a Republican, in a post on his Facebook page. “Freedom of speech is among our treasured freedoms.”
Emma Sullivan, 18, of Fairway, Kan., was sent to the principal’s office and ordered to apologize after members of Brownback’s communications office complained about her comments. She did not apologize.
