BOULDER — Highlights from Colorado coach Jon Embree’s final media luncheon of the season:

  •   It appears that playing in a bowl game will be Colorado’s No. 1 goal for 2012.

“That should be our goal,” said junior linebacker Jon Major, the only team captain who was an underclassman this season.

    Embree agrees.

“As the program continues to grow, that should be the next step,” he said today.

Outgoing senior receiver Tony Clemons said to count on it.

“I expect the team to get in a bowl game next year and compete for the (Pac-12’s) South Division,” he said.

  •   Embree plans a large recruiting class of 28 signees. An emphasis has been put on landing three or four cornerbacks, three tight ends and five defensive linemen.

National signing day is Feb. 1, although Embree said CU is looking at junior-college players, high school players that graduate early and potentially transfers.

Those could add up to between five and seven players joining the program prior to the spring semester, he said. Early enrollees can participate in spring practice.

  •   The spring game is set for Saturday, April 14. Due to the low roster numbers this spring due to the departure of 28 seniors, Embree said he does not know yet what form the spring game could take.

  •   Embree said he anticipates that his entire coaching staff will return for 2012 “unless somebody gets a great opportunity” elsewhere.

  •   Few offseason surgeries are scheduled, Embree said.

  •   Trying to recruit off a 3-10 season is not ideal, but Embree said he and his staff are getting “a lot of good responses” from prospects.

“Winning two of the last three (games) helps a lot,” Embree said. “That helps validate what we’re talking to recruits about.”

  •   Embree said no scholarship players with eligibility remaining have told him that they want to leave the program.

  •   As expected, Colorado recruiters are emphasizing California, Colorado and Texas, Embree said. But CU also is interested in a handful of players in Washington D.C. and New Jersey, he said.

Prospects from there “recruited us,” Embree said, meaning the high school players contacted Colorado and professed an interest in the Buffs.

  •   Quote of the day goes to Clemons, who has one class to pass before earning a degree in sociology next month.

“The best uniform I’ll wear is that cap and gown,” he said proudly.
