JUPITER, Fla. — Dustin Johnson had surgery Tuesday to repair cartilage in his right knee. He is expected to be out of competition until sometime in January.
Johnson won The Barclays in August to become the first player since Tiger Woods in 1999 to win in each of his first four years on the PGA Tour straight out of college. He has five career wins.
It was not clear if he would be able to play the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, which starts Jan. 6.
Vonn puts down fastest time
LAKE LOUISE, Alberta — Lindsey Vonn recorded the fastest time in downhill training runs in her first World Cup appearance since she announced she was getting a divorce.
The Vail resident completed the 3,356-yard course in 1 minute, 54.79 seconds. Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg was second, 1.67 seconds back, and Austria’s Elisabeth Goergl was third, 1.71 seconds back.
• The first training session for a World Cup downhill race on the Birds of Prey course in Beaver Creek was canceled so workers can shave down sections of the hill to help control speed.
Penguins head home
NEW YORK — Injured Penguins defensemen Kris Letang and Zbynek Michalek returned to Pittsburgh to be re-evaluated while their teammates took on the Rangers in New York.
Letang broke his nose Saturday in Montreal when he was struck by Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty, who was suspended three games for the hit.
Michalek also was hurt against Montreal. He left the game with an undisclosed injury.
• Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel leads fan balloting for the All-Star Game. His 258,446 votes moved him past Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson, who leads all blue-liners with 256,839 votes.
• Penguins forward James Neal was fined $2,500 for high sticking Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban on Saturday in Montreal.
