Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey formally charged Jerome Holt, 24, and Anthony Sykes, 20, with felonies today for scamming local retailers with zero-balance gift cards.
The charges against Holt allege that he committed fraud by signing another person’s name after using a VISA gift card to buy merchandise at two downtown Denver stores Nov. 20.
Sykes is facing a similar felony charge for committing the same crime a day later.
A third, unnamed co-defendant was cited for violating a city ordinance by providing authorities with false information related to the case.
Holt and Sykes remain in the Denver Detention Center each on $2,500 bond. They are both scheduled to appear in Denver County Court Dec. 1 to formally be advised of their charges.
A press release from the Denver District Attorney’s Office said additional stores affected by the scam and the investigation is ongoing.
