China’s Lenovo surpassed Dell as the world’s second-largest personal-computer brand in the third quarter, mounting a challenge to No. 1 ranked Hewlett-Packard, according to IHS’s iSuppli.
The research firm said Lenovo’s global PC shipments in the latest quarter rose 15 percent to 12.5 million units from the prior quarter, exceeding the overall PC market’s 5.5 percent growth for the same period. Lenovo now has a market share of 13.9 percent.
Perennial market leader HP saw shipments rise 6 percent from the prior quarter and rise 2.6 percent from last year, retaining the top spot with 18 percent market share. In recent months, HP backtracked on a plan to spin off its personal-computer business after the board ousted prior chief executive Leo Apotheker.
Dell saw shipments improve 1.3 percent sequentially but slid 0.3 percent from last year, slipping to the No. 3 spot with 12.5 percent market share.
