Friends, family and fans will gather Saturday to remember Denver’s Ron Lyle, the boxer who fought Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in classic heavyweight bouts in the 1970s.
Lyle, 70, died Saturday after complications from a stomach ailment.
This weekend’s celebration of his life will start at 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army Red Shield community center gymnasium, 2915 High St. in Denver. In recent years, Lyle coached a youth boxing program at Red Shield, located in the Whittier-Five Points neighborhood near where he grew up.
Lyle was part of consecutive memorable fights against Foreman and Earnie Shavers in 1975 and Ali in 1976.
Lyle’s televised bout with Foreman was closely watched by fans in Denver and around the world.
Tuesday’s funeral will take place at Macedonia Baptist Church, 3240 Adams St. in Denver.
The Lyle family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to: Salvation Army Cox and Lyle Boxing Program, 2915 High St., Denver, CO 80205.

Colorado State- Pueblo linebacker Lee Meisner was named the Super Region 3 defensive player of the year, making him one of five ThunderWolves to earn Daktronics all-Region 3 Honors.
Meisner, the first ThunderWolves football player to earn regional player of the year honors, also earned first-team all-region honors. He was joined on the first team by two teammates, return specialist Josh Sandoval and place-kicker Kyle Major. Earning honors as second-team selections were guard J.T. Haddan and cornerback Mark Sterling.
