DENVER—Dozens of families plan to gather in front of the offices of Colorado Attorney General John Suthers to protest his refusal to support more federal action to fight mercury pollution.

The Sierra Club and Greenpeace are sponsoring the rally Thursday to challenge Suthers’ support for delaying the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Obama Administration’s efforts for stricter federal pollution standards on coal-fired power plants.

The protesters say Colorado coal plants are producing nearly 1,200 pounds of mercury a year.
