Authorities are investigating an empty car that was set on fire Sunday along the side of U.S. 6 in Jefferson County.

The fire started about 8:50 a.m. just west of Tunnel Three, said Mark Techmeyer, a spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived, the 1998 Acura Integra was engulfed in flames.

No one was found inside or near the car. Investigators later determined the cause of the fire was arson.

“The whole thing is a real mystery,” Techmeyer said.

Authorities are working to determine who the car belongs to and whether it was stolen before it was set on fire.

Anyone with information about the car or possible suspects are asked to call the sheriff’s office tip line 303-271-5612.
