DENVER—The University of Denver may launch Colorado’s third medical school.

The Denver Post reports ( ) that DU chancellor Robert Coombe announced the medical school feasibility study in a letter to students and faculty. He cited estimates that the nation will be short of primary care doctors by 2020.

A DU School of Medicine would be the third such institution in Colorado, after longstanding University of Colorado and the more recent Rocky Vista University for osteopaths.

The dean of the University of Colorado School of Medicine questioned whether DU’s program would help the shortage. Dr. Richard Krugman told the newspaper that there is not a shortage in medical schools. He said a lack of primary care residency programs and other factors are causing the projected primary care doctor shortage.
