DURANGO, Colo.—The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety is conducting a statewide survey of coal mine fires to determine the potential dangers to the public and the environment.
Project manager Kirstin Brown about 30 fires are burning throughout the state.
According to the Durango Herald ( ), the fires are caused by lightning strikes, wildfires, humans and spontaneous combustion. Once sparked, the fires can burn for decades.
