Opening bands on small rock tours are a dime a dozen and more times than not, entirely forgettable. They make their way onto bigger tours by indie labels or buy-ons and as if there is some factory manufacturing them, they all sound completely the same. But now and then a band from Anytown, USA steps up and blows you away.
Last night at , Lansdowne was that band. The band’s music was nothing different than any other active rock band charting on SiriusXM Octane but the combination of slightly heavier music with an insane vocalist made for an impressive showing from the unsigned band.
has produced some of the most memorable songs of the modern rock era. The Kansas City band embodies the past, present and future of the grunge rock genre and their performance last night at Summit Music Hall was about as stripped-down you can get, in a good way.
In an age when artists are all about one-upping each other on the production levels of their concerts, the straight-forward style of a band like Puddle of Mudd was refreshingly all about the music. They threw in an AC/DC cover to keep things interesting, but the majority of the set drew from POM tracks like “Blurry” that transported fans back to the late early 2000s.
Front man Wes Scantlin might not be the most animated performer in the business, but his grunge-rock image, signature soulful vocals and “fuck you” attitude make the show. Vocally, Scantlin is as consistent live as anyone and last night songs like “She Hates Me” and “Psycho” sounded exactly how fans wanted them to — and itap that consistency that will keep them coming back.
