A group of Colorado kids is hitting the slopes this weekend as part of a program that works to get at-risk kids outdoors.

The “University” program, through nonprofit SOS Outreach, kicked off its 18th season this month.

The program requires kids to make a four-year commitment and focus on community service and personal growth.

There are 750 youths enrolled in the program, most of them in Colorado.

There are 160 signed up in Denver, 175 in Summit County and 240 in Eagle County.

Saturday some of them were on their first “ride-day” with the program at Monarch Mountain and Arapahoe Basin.

In the first year, students get a chance for five ride-days.

To participate, kids must complete and graduate from the organization’s Learn to Ride or Learn to Ski program.
