EL JEBEL, Colo.—Authorities say a significant amount of painkillers and sedatives have been stolen from the El Jebel fire station.
The Aspen Times reported Saturday ( ) the drugs were stolen between Nov. 10 and Nov. 27 from the Basalt and Rural Fire Protection District’s station in El Jebel.
The station keeps drugs in a vault for emergency medical responses and ambulance services. Most that were stolen from the vault had expired and were awaiting disposal.
The quantity that was taken hasn’t been released.
Fire Chief Scott Thompson says the theft may be an inside job. There was no sign of forced entry.
He says everyone with access to the vault took a urinalysis, and no one tested positive for the stolen drugs.
Federal and state agencies are assisting Eagle County investigators.
