BRIGHTON, Colo.—A coroner says there is evidence that a newborn who died shortly after delivery at University of Colorado Hospital fell on the floor, but the fall didn’t cause his death.
The baby’s father, Martin Aguirre, has said his child slid off the doctor’s hands to the ground during delivery Tuesday.
Adams County Coroner Monica Broncucia-Jordan told KUSA-TV in Denver on Thursday ( ) that the fall caused bleeding on the infant’s brain. But she says his death was caused by complications of the genetic disorder Trisomy 18, also known as Edwards syndrome.
She says she made the determination because an autopsy Wednesday revealed no evidence that the baby ever took a breath, and the injury to the baby’s brain did not occur in an area that controls respiratory function.
