Firefighters responding to a fire alarm on the University of Denver campus this morning didn’t find a fire but they did find “ammunition,” which caused some momentary alarm.

At about 4:45 a.m. firefighters went to 2050 E. Iliff Ave. on a fire alarm, said Lt. Phil Champagne, a Denver Fire Department spokesman.

There was no fire but firefighters found “artillery ammunition” in a building next to kiln furnace, Champagne said.

Firefighters alerted Denver police about the discovery and the police department’s bomb unit was called in as part of precautionary measures.

After checking it out, the bomb unit determined there are no safety concerns.

Traffic in the area was affected for a short time, but firefighters and police have packed up and moved on.
