Collection history: Have collected art for more 40 years
Scope: The couple started with contemporary Chinese art and later switched to modern and contemporary European and American art. They first collected less-expensive original prints and then moved into watercolors, drawings and other works on paper.
Key artists represented: Joan Miró, Milton Avery, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell and Antoni T…pies.
Collecting philosophy: “For me, it’s sort of a way of life. In fact, I told myself, ‘If I stop buying, I’m dead.’ And I don’t have a lot of money. I’m not a rich person by any means, just a comfortable (member of the) middle class.” — David
Ann Tanenbaum
Residence: Denver, San Francisco and New York
Occupation: Book publishing
Collection history: Begun in the late 1950s
Scope: Historical Chinese and Japanese art — porcelain, ancient metal sculpture, calligraphic hanging scrolls, with a particular emphasis on landscape painting. Also works by such American artists as Thomas Hart Benton and Paul Jenkins.
Collecting philosophy: “My collection is rather small but is a key corner of my life. I buy what I love and can afford. I’m not artist-centric, except that I do have works of dear artist friends, none of whom are supermarket names.”
