A judge has raised the bond amount for Royal “Scoop” Daniel, who was extradited to Summit County this week in a theft case.

Daniel was booked into the Summit County Detention Center in Breckenridge early Tuesday, when he was extradited from San Diego, after having been missing for more than four years.

District Court Judge Karen Romeo raised the bond to $500,000 in cash or surety and also issued a gag order for the remainder of the case.

Daniel was first arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border when he was found attempting to come into the United States.

The former Breckenridge attorney is accused of stealing more than $500,000 from his former clients before he disappeared on April 27, 2007. That morning someone called 911 from his cellphone and co-workers reported him missing.

An arrest warrant was issued for Daniel less than a week after he disappeared.

Daniel’s next court appearance is set for Dec. 19, at which time he will be advised of the charges against him and a date will be set for a preliminary hearing.

Daniel is currently charged with one count of Class 3 felony theft, and one Class 6 felony commercial bribery.

If convicted, Daniel could face up to 12 years in prison and a fine of up to $750,000 for the theft, and another year and a half in jail and up to $100,000 for the bribery charge.
