FRISCO — A technique that law-enforcement agencies have used to control the flow of weekend mountain traffic on Interstate 70 is back.
CDOT says pace cars will return today to help control traffic flows on eastbound I-70 between Silverthorne and Floyd Hill. They’re scheduled to be used again Jan. 1 and on Sundays or Mondays throughout ski season.
On two days earlier this year, police and Colorado State Patrol cars drove between 45 and 55 mph with their emergency lights flashing to pace traffic.
The Colorado Department of Transportation said the “rolling speed harmonization” tactic created more uniform vehicle speeds, which helps to improve safety, reduces crashes and improves traffic flow. CDOT supports the program by paying 24 off-duty officers overtime at a cost of about $4,500 to $5,000.
