DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES Teenager Lexi Thompson made history Saturday when she became the youngest winner on both the LPGA and Ladies European tours.
The 16-year-old American shot a 5-under-par 67 to win the Dubai Ladies Masters, becoming the youngest professional winner on that side of the Atlantic.
Thompson pulled away from Lee-Anne Pace (69) of South Africa to win by four strokes for her second professional victory. In September, she became the youngest winner of an LPGA tournament at the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama.
Thompson chipped in for a birdie on No. 9 to take a one-shot lead over Pace and extended her lead with four birdies on the back nine for a 15-under 273 total.
B Lee Westwood, who led the Thailand Golf Championship by 11 strokes at the halfway stage after going bogey-free on the opening two days, shot a 1-over 73 in the third round that allowed Masters champion Charl Schwartzel (66) to cut the deficit in half.
Westwood’s total of 197 for three rounds left him at 19-under. Schwartzel was at 201.
B Geoff Ogilvy took a two-stroke lead over England’s Ian Poulter (69) at the Australian Masters in Melbourne, shooting an 8-under 63 on his boyhood course at Victoria Golf Club for a 13-under 200 total.
Reds acquire Latos from Padres CINCINNATI
The Cincinnati Reds addressed their biggest offseason need, acquiring right-handed starter Mat Latos from the San Diego Padres for a package of four players that includes two top prospects.
Cincinnati gave up infielder Yonder Alonso and catcher Yasmani Grandal — both first-round picks — along with starting pitcher Edinson Volquez to get the 24-year-old Latos, who went 9-14 with a 3.47 ERA for the Padres last season, finishing among the NL leaders in ERA and strikeouts.
B Three people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that shortstop Jimmy Rollins has agreed to a three-year, $33 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.
B The San Francisco Giants signed backup catcher Eli Whiteside to a one-year deal after declining to offer him a contract Monday, which voided arbitration and made him a free agent.
Roethlisberger back at practice PITTSBURGH
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger practiced but remains questionable for Monday night’s game at San Francisco.
Roethlisberger sprained his left ankle during a 14-3 win over Cleveland on Dec. 8. He did not speak to reporters following practice, but guard Ramon Foster said the quarterback showed little problems throwing the ball despite limited mobility.
B Minnesota Vikings center John Sullivan, one of the few bright spots on a 2-11 team, was rewarded with a five-year contract extension.
World Cup downhill is called off VAL GARDENA, Italy
Right before Bode Miller‘s run, a World Cup downhill was canceled because of strong winds. Despite several delays, 21 competitors had negotiated the twisty and terrain-filled course before organizers decided to call it off for safety reasons.
BShani Davis and Heather Richardson won 1,500- meter races for their third victories in the U. S. Speed Skating Long Track Championships in West Allis, Wis.
Davis and Richardson also won the 500 and 1,000 meter events at the Pettit National Ice Center.
