According to NORAD, the tradition began in 1955 after a Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement for children in Colorado Springs to call Santa misprinted the telephone number. Instead of reaching Santa, the kids reached the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD). CONAD answered, and a tradition was born. The Denver Post
