A Colorado Springs police officer spent much of Christmas in the hospital as a precaution after a crash at about 12:30 a.m. today when he was responding to an emergency call.

The officer’s name was not released.

The crash happened on Academy Boulevard at Austin Bluffs Parkway, when the officer drove into the intersection with the cruiser’s emergency lights and sirens on, according to the Colorado Springs police.

Elizabeth Fernandez, 41, was driving the car that collided with the officer. She is accused of failing to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle.

Two occupants of her car were hurt, but their injuries were characterized by police as non-life-threatening.

The investigation is ongoing, police said, citing alcohol as a possible contributing factor in the crash.

Court records show Fernandez was ticketed for careless driving in Colorado Springs in 2008.
