LOVELAND — A band of officers and a K-9 dog set off across the snowy landscape along Byrd Drive west of Interstate 25 last winter in pursuit of a man evading the law.
Deputies from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office had signaled for the man to pull off the side of the road in his vehicle, Lt. Leslie Young said. He eventually complied but took off on foot in the snow, dropping a brick of marijuana in the process.
Kyro, one of the Loveland Police Department’s three K-9 officers, was on the man’s scent, tracking ahead of his partner, Officer Steve Colburn. Eventually, officers found the man in a snow bank and apprehended him.
As he raised his hands above his head, authorities spotted a knife in one hand. A few more steps, and Kyro may have been killed.
To avoid such tragedy, Colburn and other department leaders have peace of mind in the form of a new, dog-size bulletproof, knife-proof Kevlar vest.
