Denver firefighters put out a two-alarm fire on the 11th floor of a high-rise apartment building on 1st Avenue and Emerson Street.
Division chief Tony Berumen, acting as a spokesman, credited Rick DeLong, a security member of the Park Place Apartments, for his quick thinking that eventually helped them put out the fire without a hitch.
“He did an excellent job,” Berumen said. “He went in right away with a fire extinguisher and put out the fire on the couch then closed the door to the apartment and called us.”
Berumen said fire crews got the call at about 6:12 p.m.
The fire was upgraded to a second alarm fire while crews worked on making sure the couch fire was completely out.
Firefighters were able to maintain the fire to the couch, and none of the apartments were extensively damaged.
Residents weren’t evacuated, but one woman who lived in the apartment where the fire started did self-evacuate.
“We try to operate keeping as many occupants in place unless it becomes unsafe,” Berumen said.
There are no reports of injuries.
