Two women were taken to a hospital Friday morning after they were attacked in Aurora by two dogs.

The attacks happened about 6 a.m. in the 19200 block of East Gunnison Circle, Aurora police spokeswoman Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said.

One woman was walking her small dog, a Havanese, when two large, stray dogs attacked the smaller dog.

The woman tried to shield her dog and the two attacking dogs turned on her, Carlson said.

A neighbor showed up and tried to stop the attack by “throwing a blanket on the two dogs in an attempt to distract them,” Carlson said.

The dogs turned and chased the second woman, who was running back to her house. The dogs took her to the ground and began mauling her.

Meanwhile, another resident, a man, got involved and the dogs attacked him.

While the attacking dogs were distracted, the first woman found refuge in the back seat of a car that had stopped.

The man under attack scrambled to the top of a vehicle as the two dogs circled it. They took off a short time later.

Michael Gassert, who lives in the complex where the attacks occurred, said when he stepped out of his home, police were on scene with guns drawn.

“I didn’t really hear the lady screaming, but my neighbor said she was so weak by the time she saw her, she couldn’t even scream anymore,” Gassert said.

Police said the owner of the small dog was taken to a local hospital and her dog was taken to a veterinarian.

The woman who acted as a good Samaritan was the most seriously hurt.

Police and animal control officers are still looking for the stray dogs.
