ASPEN, Colo.—Aspen Skiing Co. is exploring an idea to build a methane-power plant that would tap gas vented from a coal mine.
The resort company had pledged by the end of this year to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 10 percent from what it produced in 2000. The Aspen Times reports () the company has a ways to go to reach its goal.
The company has been replacing buildings with more energy-efficient ones, among other projects, but it also is using more power since acquiring a lodge in 2009 and improving some ski lifts.
Auden Schendler of Aspen Skiing Co. says a methane power plant has the potential for the company to offset its consumption through its investment, but it’s too early to say if such a project is feasible.
