A man was killed after the pickup he was driving fast and erratically crashed into a large tree in a Lakewood neighborhood early Saturday morning, authorities say.

The name of the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not released pending notification of family members.

“A lot of neighbors heard the engine and a loud crash,” said Detective Ryan McKone of the Lakewood Police Department.

Several people in the 100 block of South Pierce Street were awakened by the speeding car at 2:30 a.m., McKone said.

The car struck a curb, veered into the middle of a yard at a home at 190 S. Pierce St. and struck a tree, he said.

“The pickup was definitely wrapped around the tree,” McKone said. “It took a long time to extricate the man from the pickup.

“That’s how mangled this truck was.”

Authorities will perform toxicology tests to determine whether the man had been drinking.
