LAFAYETTE, Colo.—Police say an explosive device that seriously injured two people in Lafayette was left beside their car in a paper bag with their names written on it.

Authorities say 44-year-old Allyson Stone and her husband, 59-year-old Christopher Stone, were hospitalized with burns after the explosion on Saturday. No other information about the couple or the device has been released.

Authorities said Sunday the couple found the bag as they were preparing to drive to Boulder and put it in the car with them. Christopher Stone told police it exploded when his wife began to open it.

About 20 homes were evacuated for eight hours as police investigated.

Police have said they believe the Stones were the target and that the public isn’t in danger.
