DENVER—The Denver Post is reporting that nearly 500 oil refinery workers for Suncor Energy have had their blood tested for benzene after health officials found petroleum dissolved in groundwater under a Denver-area refinery ( ).
The newspaper says that it’s unknown how long drinking water at the refinery has contained benzene and that results of the blood tests are confidential.
Denver Water, which delivers water to Suncor, says that no benzene entered the metro pipe system.
The Suncor refinery near Denver was blamed for oil seeping into nearby Sand Creek late last year. Benzene levels in Sand Creek on Dec. 22 reached 670 parts per billion, 134 times higher than the national drinking water standard.
