Woman and firefighter burned after propane tank erupts in flames during house fire in Greeley

A woman and a firefighter suffered first-degree burns after a propane cylinder erupted in flames during a house fire in Greeley this morning.

Around 1:35 a.m., firefighters were called to a home at 1723 Montview Road, where neighbors reported the fire, according to a news release from the Greeley Fire Department.

After the fire started, a woman who lives at the home attempted to shut off a propane heater that was on a covered patio. As she tried to turn the valve off, it became loose and eventually detached from the unit, and a large flame poured from the cylinder.

Neighbors heard a loud “whoosh” and reported seeing a loud ball of flames, according to the fire department. One neighbor said they were awakened by the loud noise the flame made.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was taken to Northern Colorado Medical Center with first and second-degree burns. Her condition was not immediately known.

When firefighters arrived, the exterior of the house was engulfed in flames. The blaze was quickly extinquished.

A firefighter suffered first-degree burns from the propane tank’s flame and was . They were also transported to Northern Colorado Medical Center, treated and released.

No other injuries were reported.

Most of the fire damage was on the exterior of the house, but some of the fire did extend into the attic. Damage to the home is estimated at $25,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
