ARVADA — Casey Coons, a longtime figure on Colorado sidelines, resigned Thursday morning as head coach of Class 5A Arvada West football.
“After 30 years, it’s time for a change,” the 52-year-old coach said. “I’m not planning on leaving. If (the Wildcats) need an offensive line coach or something like that, I would like to do that.”
Coons’ tenure includes 15 years at the college level. In 10 years with the Wildcats, his teams were 74-41, including four semifinal appearances, the last in 2009, and nine playoff appearances. Arvada West was 2-8 in 2011.
A physical education teacher, Coons said, “Sometimes change is good. I hope they keep me around. I think they need new blood, new ideas and if I can be an asset, I will.”
Coons added that the Wildcats will have ample material returning, and that he’s “grateful for my time here.”
It is known that other jobs open in 5A include Mullen and Overland.
