LONGMONT, Colo.—About 20 students are facing tests for tuberculosis after a student at Longmont High School tested positive for the disease.
Denver metro TB medical director Dr. Randall Reves says the strain is not drug-resistant and there is no outbreak.
According to the Longmont Times-Call ( ), the school sent a letter to parents of about 20 students who may have been exposed to the disease and need to be tested, and to parents of the other students.
Tuberculosis is caused by bacteria spread from person to person through the air. TB usually affects the lungs, and can lead to symptoms such as chest pain and coughing up blood. The disease is easily treated by antibiotics, but can be fatal.
