GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The National Weather Service is warning residents of northwest Colorado they can expect heavy snow over the next few days.

The weather service said Wednesday blowing and drifting snow will increase over the region by nightfall and continue into Friday.

Forecasters say moisture from the West Coast is moving into the area and could extend to the Continental Divide.

Gusts as high as 120 mph were predicted above 10,000 feet in the foothills west of Golden, Boulder and Fort Collins. Forecasters warned the high winds could lead to power outages and downed trees but also could topple high-profile or lightweight vehicles.

West of Denver, Echo Mountain ski area closed Wednesday after reporting gusts of 70 mph.
