Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow and world championship swimmer Missy Franklin of Regis Jesuit High School were named state athletes of the year for 2011 on Tuesday by the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame and will be honored April 10 at the organization’s annual awards banquet at the Denver Marriott City Center.

Also selected: Northern Colorado’s Devon Beitzel, male college athlete of the year; Colorado State’s Katelyn Steffan, female college athlete; Loveland’s Connor Medbery, male high school athlete; Wheat Ridge’s Annie Kunz, female high school athlete; and Mike Smisek, disabled athlete recognition award.

Rapids draft two. The Rapids picked Kohei Yamada and Joel Helmick in the Major League Soccer supplemental draft. Yamada is a midfielder from Japan, Hel- mick a goalkeeper from Longwood (Va.) University.

Roadrunners rise. The Metro State men’s and women’s basketball teams are both back in the Division II top five, with the men moving up one spot to No. 4 and the women two spots to No. 5. The Colorado Mines men’s team is No. 12. The No. 4 Fort Lewis women’s team plays Friday at Metro State at 5 p.m.
