FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A 27-year-old Fort Collins woman has been arrested on allegations she fabricated a report that a man impersonating a police officer sexually assaulted her.

Larimer County sheriff’s officials Wednesday say the report by Heather Speicher Jan. 5 tied up two lab technicians and six investigators who tracked down about 40 tips. Authorities say Speicher assisted deputies in developing a composite sketch of the alleged suspect.

Deputies are recommending a felony charge of attempting to influence a public official and will seek restitution. The charge carries a maximum of six years in prison. A number listed for Speicher is disconnected and it’s unclear whether she has an attorney.

In 2010, Richard and Mayumi Heene in Larimer County agreed to pay $36,000 for falsely reporting their son floated away in a balloon.
