Denver Mayor Michael Hancock added his name Thursday to the list of more than 70 mayors pledging to support same-sex marriage.

The group, Mayors for Freedom to Marry, will hold a news conference today as part of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C.

Mayors who join the group are committed to ending the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage, according a statement from the national Freedom to Marry campaign.

“I believe it’s best left to couples to make the determination of how they want to express and celebrate their love for each other,” Hancock said during a conference call from Washington.

Freedom to Marry said the mayors hail from across the country and are Republicans, Democrats and independents.

The group’s co-chairs include the mayors of New York, Los Angeles, San Diego and Boston.

As part of the trip, Hancock also met Wednesday night with President Barack Obama and a handful of other mayors to discuss job creation.
