Barn fire kills 22 show horses

LAFAYETTE, n.j. — Authorities say a fast-moving fire destroyed a barn owned by a noted New Jersey equestrian family, killing 22 show horses worth tens of thousands of dollars each.

State Police Sgt. Brian Polite says the barn was engulfed in flames when troopers arrived about 1:40 a.m. Saturday in Lafayette. The blaze was soon extinguished, but all the horses inside were killed. Betty Hahn, whose family owns the barn, told The Star-Ledger that the animals were valued at $10,000 to $60,000 apiece. Her family has competed and won awards in equestrian competitions along the East Coast.

Judgments upheld for mob boss’ victims •BOSTON — A federal appeals court has upheld multimillion-dollar judgments that found the government liable for the deaths of three people allegedly murdered by mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit upheld awards Friday that ranged from $350,000 to $1.3 million for the families of Debra Davis, Deborah Hussey and Louis Litif. The court affirmed a trial judge’s decision that the FBI showed “wildly reckless behavior” in using Bulger and his associate, Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi, as informants and shielding them from prosecution.

Rappers 2 Live Crew reunite •PARK CITY, utah — The rap group that created controversy in the early 1990s with songs like “Me So Horny” is reuniting and hitting the road.

Luther Campbell said Saturday that 2 Live Crew is back together and will tour this summer. The rapper and producer made the announcement at the Sundance Film Festival, where he is promoting his appearance in the short film “The Life and Freaky Times of Uncle Luke.”

Three die in house fire near Marist College •POUGHKEEPSIE, n.y. — A fire tore through a private home being rented by Marist College students near campus early Saturday morning, killing three people, authorities said.

The victims were identified as two female Marist students in their early 20s and one male, who was not a student at the school. Their names have not been released. Four other people in the house escaped. Denver Post wire services
