COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado Springs firefighters say at least two children who were seen entering a manhole are believed to be safe.

The Gazette () says crews called off a search about 90 minutes after a utility worker saw the kids get into the sewer system through the manhole on Monday. Fresh air was pumped into the system during the search.

The kids were never found. But fire department Lt. Kriss Soppe said there are several exits where they could have escaped.

Matt Curran is a Colorado Springs Utilities service specialist. He says the city will to replace the manhole cover with a heavier lid that should be impossible for kids to open.
