The murder trial of Longmont man Kevin McGregor in the March 2011 shooting death of University of New Hampshire football player Todd Walker on University Hill opened this morning with defense attorneys again raising concerns about McGregor’s ability to get a fair trial in Boulder County.

Public defender Eric Zale said coverage in the Camera, including an article in this morning’s paper previewing the trial — one that jurors could easily have seen on their way into the courthouse — would make it difficult to seat an impartial jury.

The article included information about McGregor’s prior conviction for second-degree assault that won’t be presented at trial.

Boulder District Judge D.D. Mallard, who previously rejected another defense request for a change of venue, said the article raised her blood pressure, and said attorneys could ask potential jurors about the article during the jury selection process.
