Bikes are big business in Boulder.
Boulder’s bicycle-related businesses generated $52 million in sales and supported 330 full-time positions in 2010, according to the nonprofit Community Cycles.
The results are based on surveys of 24 businesses and organizations conducted in 2011. Community Cycles estimated bike-related retail, rental and repair shops supported 214 jobs and generated more than $24.4 million in revenue; manufacturing supported 13 jobs and generated $10.4 million in sales; education and advocacy organizations supported 48 jobs and generated $7.9 million in revenue; and a group designated as miscellaneous supported 55 jobs and generated more than $9.5 million in revenue.
“We believe our estimate of $52 million is low, as we know bicycling touches on so many other aspects of Boulder’s economy,” said Sue Prant, advocacy and development director for Community Cycles. “This money continues to cycle in the community through retail, tourism, entertainment and cultural spending.”
