GUNNISON — Metro State wiped out a 17-point deficit, but Travis Shepherd made four free throws in the final 5.8 seconds to propel Western State (8-10, 6-8 RMAC) to a 70-66 upset of Metro State on Friday night.
The Roadrunners (12-2, 17-2), ranked No. 3 in Division II, used a 12-2 run to tie the game with 2:40 left, and had several chances to take the lead but could not convert. Metro State’s Reggie Evans led all scorers with 29 points. Weylan Towns topped the Mountaineers with 14 points, and Alex Hart added 13.
Colorado Mines 98, Chadron State 68 GOLDEN —
Mines started the game on a 6-0 run and led by 18 points in the first half before settling for a 48-35 halftime lead. The Orediggers turned up the offense even more in the second half, shooting 67 percent (16-of-24).
Trevor Ritchie and Brian Muller added 13 points each for Mines.
Women
Metro State 73, Western State 67 GUNNISON —
Valencia’s sister Kristin started the comeback with a 3-pointer with 7:04 left, then Brandi had two key baskets as Metro State (17-1, 13-1 RMAC), ranked No. 4 in Division II, took a 61-59 lead with 3:50 to play.
The Mountaineers (9-11, 8-6) tied the game twice on two free throws by Katie Hall and a layup by Taylor Murray, but could not respond after Brandi Valencia’s 3-pointer with the shot clock running down.
Chadron State 72, Colorado Mines 69 (OT) GOLDEN —
Marla Munsen made 1-of-2 from the line with 35 seconds left, and, after a Mines turnover with three seconds left and then an Oredigger foul, Kaitlin Petri made both free throws to seal the win.
No. 5 Duke 81, Clemson 37 CLEMSON, S.C. —
The Blue Devils (17-2, 8-0 ACC) came in to Littlejohn Coliseum off an 80-72 win over No. 8 Maryland on Monday and didn’t miss a beat against the Tigers (5-13, 1-6).
Duke, which has 15 straight victories over Clemson, used a 15-2 run the last five minutes of the opening half to gain control. It was the eighth straight game they have defeated Clemson by 24 points or more.
