The Denver police training academy has received certification it needs to operate for the next three years.
Budget cuts led to the cancellation of recruit classes in 2008, and no classes are expected until 2013. A rule of the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, which certifies police training academies in the state, calls for a training facility’s approval to expire if no class is held within a three-year period.
The last recruit-training class ended in April, 2009, and the department chose to go through an approval process for new academies that is more rigorous than that for renewal. The process was completed last week when POST inspected the facility.
“Denver Police Academy has met and exceeded all P.O.S.T. requirements,” according to a letter to the Academy from the Attorney General’s office dated Jan. 26.
