The Colorado Capitol’s dome is going under wraps today, as contractors take the next step in the restoration project expected to last more than two years.
Crews are wrapping a white, protective and weatherproof “scrim” around the dome and scaffolding, according to the website for , the campaign behind the restoration.
The dome will remained covered until the summer of 2014.
Over the past 100 years, the freeze-thaw cycle in Colorado damaged the dome’s metal exterior. In 2006, the outside observation deck was closed after conditions became unsafe for visitors.
