COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—El Paso County commissioners have approved a scaled-down version of regulations that the county planning commission had supported to address impacts of oil and gas drilling in the county.
County commissioners voted 3-2 Tuesday to approve rules covering damage to roads and bridges, effects on emergency response and control of noxious weeds. The rules also incorporate state standards on water quality testing and monitoring of nearby water wells.
The Gazette reports () the objecting commissioners expressed concern that water quality is already regulated by the state, which has tried to prevent conflicts between local and Colorado rules.
The commissioners plan to work with the state to address other issues of local concern such as how far rigs must be from homes and mitigation of visual impacts, noise and to wildlife.
