Wyoming football coach Dave Christensen on Friday announced that quarterback Brett Smith underwent undisclosed surgery and the procedure was successful.
“Brett had surgery Thursday,” Christensen said. “The surgery went well, and we expect Brett to be back during spring ball.”
Smith was the Mountain West freshman of the year in 2011. He started all 13 games, throwing for 2,622 yards and 20 touchdowns and accounting for 3,332 yards of total offense. He rushed for 10 touchdowns.
Rapids release forward Folan
The Rapids announced they have released forward Caleb Folan “by mutual consent.”
“This will allow us the ability to bring in other players ahead of the season, in positions where we have greater need,”” Rapids technical director Paul Bravo said in a release.
Folan’s departure is the latest in what appears to be a move toward a more Latin flavor for the Rapids. In the weeks since hiring Oscar Pareja as head coach, the club signed Colombian Jaime Castrillón and has two international slots left. The roster must be set at 30, with no more than six players listed as internationals, by March 1.
Abbott out of Four Continents
Three-time U.S. figure skating champion and Aspen native Jeremy Abbott has withdrawn from next week’s Four Continents meet because of a right hip injury.
RMAC rescheduling
Because of the recent winter storm, several Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games have been rescheduled, postponed or canceled.
In men’s and women’s basketball, Friday’s Colorado Mines at Metro State and Colorado Christian at Regis games have been postponed until Monday.
All RMAC softball games scheduled for today were canceled, and Friday’s wrestling meet between Colorado Mines and Fort Hays State was postponed.
